I was born and brought up on the beautiful island of Mauritius, where I studied English and French and also learned Hindi. After my A-Levels (Grade 12), I moved to London (UK) to study Modern Languages at King's College London. My passion for teaching began while I was completing my degree in French Language and Literature with a minor in English Language and Literature. As I was earning this degree, I also spent my free time working in a high school as an Educational Assistant. When I graduated from university, the school that I was working at offered me the position of an "Unqualified French Teacher" and proposed that I complete a Graduate Teacher Program to acquire my Qualified Teacher Status in the UK. I accepted the school's suggestion and went right into the program. This meant that I spent four days a week working in my classroom as a full-time teacher and one day per week at Middlesex University to acquire the relevant pedagogic knowledge (known in Canada as the onsite program). I completed this program and earned my QTS in December of 2008. I continued my teaching journey in the UK until I took some time off to raise my two children. In 2014, I moved to Toronto, where I worked for Fieldstone Schools as an FSL teacher and Curriculum Leader. I subsequently took a position at St Clement's school to diversify my Ontarian teaching experience. I enrolled in the B.Ed. program at uOttawa to further develop my skills and knowledge of the Canadian and Ontarian teaching system. My journey so far has been a unique and fantastic opportunity to learn from various cultures, traditions, and mindsets. I believe this experience is an asset. Through this program I got to think about the axes of power that I hold. As an educated bilingual female teacher with South Asian heritage, there’s so much I can do to empower students who cross my path! I have been reflecting a lot on how I can ensure that every child is given the same opportunity and how to have those difficult conversations around racism, discrimination and LGBTQ topics for example. We need to teach students how to embrace each other differences and create environments that are safe for all.
